HMRC to halve its North West offices

HM Revenue & Customs is to pull out of 20 buildings in the North West after completing a cost-cutting review of its regional offices.

The study, which examined the department's occupation of buildings in areas in and around Manchester, Liverpool, Preston and Blackpool, resulted in the decision to retain offices 22 buildings around the region.

The department will vacate the following buildings in phased operations from spring 2009:

· Roberts House, Manchester Road, Altrincham

· Crown Building, Oakglade House, Booth Street, Ashton-under-Lyne

· Minden Parade, Bury

· Boundary House, Cheadle Point, Cheadle

· Boardman House, Leigh Road, Leigh

· Phoenix House, Union Street, Oldham

· Newgate House, Newgate, Rochdale

· Anchorage 2, Anchorage Quay, Salford

· Wellesley House, Wellington Road North, Stockport

· Birchen House, 1 Canning Street, Birkenhead

· Graeme House, Derby Square, Liverpool

· Norwich House, Water Street, Liverpool

· Regian House, James Street, Liverpool

· 1 Kingsway House, Caldwell Road, Widnes

· Castle House, Eastgate, Accrington

· Mexford House, Mexford Avenue, Blackpool

· Lingmell House, Water Street, Chorley

· Petros House, St. Andrews Road, Lytham St. Annes

· Dukes House, Hoghton Street, Southport

· Government Buildings, Cop Lane, Penwortham, Preston

The following buildings are being retained:

· Charles House, Winckley Square, Preston

· Diadem House, The Pavilions, Portway, Preston

· The Guild Centre, Lords Walk, Preston

· St Mark's House, St Mary's Street, Preston

· St Mary's House, St Mary's Street, Preston

· Unicentre, Lords Walk, Preston

· Litherland House, Litherland Road, Bootle

· St John's House, Merton Road, Bootle

Mary Hay, HMRC director responsible for the programme, said: "These decisions are the latest to emerge from a nationwide series of reviews designed to create the future shape of the department. In arriving at them, we've engaged widely with Trades Unions, MPs, local authorities and a range of customer groups as well as with our own employees. Their feedback, together with feasibility studies carried out by our professional estates and IT partners, have given us a robust basis for the conclusions being announced today."
