High Grange expands Cumbria housing plans

Developer High Grange is set to get the go-ahead to add a further 65 houses on a seven-acre plot at its Keekle Meadows scheme in Cleator Moor.

The housebuilder is proposing to bring forward an additional plot of land to the west of Cleator Moor, next to an existing housing estate and a site High Grange is currently building out.

The latest planning application is in outline form but proposes a maximum of 65 more houses; access will be via a new entrance road from the B5295 which has recently been completed to serve other parts of the development.

This will be the fourth phase of High Grange’s development at the site – earlier phases include around 125 homes, meaning that the area will eventually see 200 homes built out if the latest application is approved.

There have been objections from Cleator Moor Town Council on the plans to add more houses at the site, with the council arguing the area was not highlighted for development in Copeland Council’s Local Plan, and coming out against further development on greenfield sites.

However, Copeland planning officers have recommended the council give the scheme the green light when its planning committee meets next week, arguing the proposals would help to meet the borough’s five-year housing supply.

Planners added the benefits of the scheme, including meeting housing need and supporting local businesses in the construction phase, would “significantly and demonstrably outweigh and landscape and visual impact that would result from extending development into open countryside on this edge of town”.

Copeland’s planning committee meets on 23 January.
