HawkinsBrown wins brief for £50m UCLan gateway

The Manchester-based architect has been selected to design a Student Support Centre and new public square for the University of Central Lancashire in Preston.

The £50m project is the University’s flagship scheme in its £200m 10-year campus masterplan.

Following the launch of a RIBA competition earlier this year, in June UCLan announced a shortlist of seven practices, including Austin-Smith:Lord, Feilden Clegg Bradley and Sheppard Robson.

According to UCLan, if combined, the new student support centre and civic square will be the same size as London’s Trafalgar Square.

HawkinsBrown’s appointment to the scheme is currently the subject of a legal standstill period, but is due to be confirmed by the end of this month.

All parties declined to comment.

The campus redevelopment was masterplanned by Allies & Morrison. BDP is providing engineering expertise.
