Hark Group given more time in Ashton

Tameside Council has granted Hark Group a four-year extension to the planning permission for its proposed 180,000 sq ft retail development at Ashton Arcades shopping centre.

Hark Group was originally granted permission in 2006 but the development stalled during the recession and the consent was due to expire.

The extra space at the Arcades will be built on the site of the existing bus station. A new interchange is due for completion as part of the wider regeneration of the town centre area in 2013.

Rob Cossey, director of Hark Group, said: "This announcement shows that the council continues to support our ambition to develop the retail offer at Ashton Arcades. We have worked very closely with our public sector partners at Tameside Council and Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive to design an integrated scheme which can be progressively developed to continue the regeneration of Ashton town centre."
