Green light expected for Derwent’s Walkden scheme

Derwent Holdings is expected to win approval for the third phase of its redevelopment of Ellesmere Shopping Centre in Walkden.

Its plans for the construction of 10 new retail units and a 62,000 sq ft market hall will go before Salford City Council's planning committee on 19 January.

Council officers have recommended the scheme is approved.

It was knocked back by councillors in November who said a plan to partially cover a large pond with decking to create 60 car parking spaces would lead to the loss of recreational land.

They also said that Derwent, "failed to demonstrate that the proposals would represent a sustainable form of development."

In revised plans Derwent has removed the pond decking and provided more information to the council about sustainable development.

Derwent's architect on the scheme, which already includes a Tesco megastore, is AEW.
