Government grants £3m to MOSI

The Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne has confirmed that Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry will receive £3m towards the development of a temporary exhibition gallery.

Speaking at MOSI yesterday at the launch of the European City of Science 2016, Osborne said the development would result in "world-class facilities to host a programme of visiting exhibitions".

MOSI was granted an £800,000 initial investment from the Treasury in March this year to begin the design and planning phases of the expansion.

The new gallery is to be housed in the basement of the 1830 railway warehouse. The internal vaulted space will be opened up to create a double-height 5,000 sq ft room.
