GM Open Data Infrastructure Map launched

A free online mapping tool enabling users to overlay 50 different types of infrastructure assets in Greater Manchester has been created by policy advisor New Economy along with Salford City Council and funded by the Cabinet Office’s Release of Data Fund.

The open data service provides a range of details including planned transport works, communications links, streetlight locations and designated nature reserves, amongst many others.

The infrastructure map was developed by New Economy and Salford City Council on behalf of Greater Manchester’s Local Enterprise Partnership and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s planning and housing team.

Mike Blackburn, chairman of GM LEP, said: “The open data map is an important milestone in Greater Manchester’s ambitious growth plans. By harnessing and better connecting the information that is available, we can connect our short term activity to a much longer term vision, to ensure we create the best possible outcomes for the future.”

Simon Nokes, interim chief executive of New Economy, said: “This project is a leading example of how to put open data to practical use and the map will be central to wider efforts in joining up the way we approach Greater Manchester’s infrastructure development.

“New Economy, working with Salford City Council, has designed the map to enable local authorities and businesses with a stake in planning, to better explore and understand the opportunities and challenges for development across the region. I’m pleased we’ve already made a strong start in securing various datasets for the map, from a wide range of partners in a range of formats.

“The next step will be to disseminate the existing data and look at ways to improve the map with feedback from our partners and potential new users. We intend to continue developing the map further, both in terms of its functionality and by adding extra datasets as they become available.”

A seminar and workshop focusing on Greater Manchester’s Open Data Infrastructure Map will take place on 1 July. Attendance is free but strictly limited. To register your interest, please RSVP to: mapping@neweconomymanchester.com.

I’d better take my iPad with me as proof I’m on a genuine TfGM route when I cycle across the Second Runway.
