Glenbrook maps £70m Wigan industrial park

The developer plans to create the 625,000 sq ft scheme on a 40-acre site off Bolton Road in response to “significant regional demand” for employment space for small and medium-sized firms.

The 12-unit industrial park, to be known as Meridian 6 Wigan, would act as an extension to South Lancashire Industrial Estate in Ashton in Makerfield.

Designed by AEW Architects, the scheme would be built on land that has been designated for employment uses since 2006, and could create up to 1,500 jobs once complete, according to Glenbrook.

Dan Symonds, development manager at Glenbrook, said: “We are bringing this scheme forward at a time when the need to support business and the economy through the creation and retention of jobs in the borough is extremely pressing.

“Meridian 6 Wigan will build on the success of the established South Lancashire Industrial Estate and attract more investment and employment opportunities to the area, as well as delivering much-needed commercial space for local businesses looking to grow.”

Fingers crossed this gets planning.

This is absolutely unacceptable as the local infrastructure is failing to cope with existing volume of traffic. All approaches to the proposed entrance to the site suffer from standing traffic for prolonged periods every day. The local residents will not only be subjected to additional transport delays but also the increased pollution. Vehicles already form queues for over an hour everyday in this residential area.

Does Wigan not need development, investment and jobs? This is an allocated site and it’s only surprising that it has taken so long to come forward. The borough has no significant level of employment land left and is losing jobs and investment regularly as a result. I agree the council and Highways England need to invest further in local transport infrastructure but we can’t keep putting off the additional investment the private sector are willing to make. I live in Wigan and I definitely want to see development. I also think all cars will be electric in 10 years time, meaning pollution from vehicles won’t be an issue!

This is not a good idea
Our roads can’t cope
The traffic would be even worse than it is now and it’s already a problem
The air pollution I such close proximity to so many schools
The noise pollution
The needles use of greenbelt land
So many other places this could go in non residential places

Bolton Road cannot take anymore traffic, it is already stop start from this access point into Ashton centre when schools and works are open. Then there is the pollution and safety issue for all people in Ashton if more wagons are causing congestion. Surely it makes more sense to build units near access road onto the motorway so they don’t have to go though small towns not designed for that size of traffic.

We have walked from Wigan back into Ashton today and have seen several sites that are advertising units for rent or buildings that have been built but are not being used. There is too much traffic in Ashton, the infrastructure is not there. The roads are in an appalling condition due to the sheer volume of traffic even in this third lockdown. Once traffic levels go back to normal which they will, it will be horrendous. Try getting through Ashton if there is the slightest delay on the M6, try getting through Ashton to Platt Bridge and through to Hindley. Try getting through Ashton when the schools are open or when there is an afternoon/evening race meeting on at Haydock.

Why should residents on the roads that are being affected have to put up with more noise and traffic pollution. Build on brownfield and not on protected greenfield. Ashton may have proximity to the M6 but the infrastructure is just not there.

There is a family of great crested newts on the land they propose to build on. ARC Trust have been informed. Based on this, the proposals won’t go ahead.
