General Store to open at Kampus

Julia Hatmaker

Capital & Centric and HBD’s Kampus is beginning to shape up, announcing its second major letting after it welcomed pizzeria and pub Common & Co in April.

Coming in at 4,500 sq ft, the boutique grocery store will offer a mix of food and drink from both well-known brands and independent artisans. It is slated to open in autumn.

“Kampus is fast becoming a neighbourhood in its own right and true to our word we’re sticking with independents,” said Adam Higgins, co-founder of Capital & Centric. “We turned down plenty of chain supermarkets as that bland identikit approach isn’t right for Kampus and definitely not what our residents want.”

The Kampus General Store is designed by Youth, which also styled the 534 loft and apartments in the complex. One and two-bedroom apartments are currently open for viewings.

Kampus is the latest development in the General Store’s rapid expansion strategy. The Manchester-based retailer already has four shops – Ancoats, Moss Side, Castlefield and Salford – and has announced three more, including Kampus. The other two new General Stores will be in MediaCity and Deansgate Square.

Kampus is the £250m creation of Capital & Centric and HBD. The mixed-use build-to-rent scheme has approximately 323,000 sq ft for residential and 40,000 sq ft for commercial projects. Letting announcements are beginning to come in, with another food-related business to be unveiled in a few weeks. There will be 16 different independent vendors coming to Kampus this year, including restaurants, bars, retailers and cafes. The project incorporates into its design a Brutalist 1960s tower block and the grade two-listed Minto & Turner and Minshull House warehouses. Kampus is located on Aytoun Street in Manchester.

Great operator, much better than another chain! Went to Bread Flower at Kampus on Sunday too. Looking great and fantastic to see all the people back in the city. Just need a bit more sun and we’ll be back to normal.

When you are paying from £1,280 pcm for a small 1 bed flat you don’t want to be down at the Tesco Express with the hoi polloi.
