GDF picks Jacobs for gas storage plant

Global energy company Gaz de France Storage has appointed Jacobs Engineeering to deliver an underground gas storage facility at Ineos' brinefields in Northwich, Cheshire.

The new facility at Stublach Grange Farm will be capable of holding 700,000 tonnes of natural gas and 50,000 tonnes of methanol. GDF Storage is part of the Paris-listed GDF Suez group which employs 200,000 people around the world.

GDF will develop and operate the facility under agreement with Ineos which owns the site. Ineos secured planning and hazardous substances consent for the Stublach Gas Storage Facility in 2006.

The project will consist of up to 28 cavities that will be solution mined for gas storage at Ineos' existing brinefields, along with a gas compression station and associated infrastructure that will connect the facility to the National Transmission System.

Jacobs has offices around the UK including three in the region in Sale, Cheadle and Manchester city centre.
