Developer Network Space and lead contractor Willmott Dixon have completed the £15m Tameside Wellness Centre ahead of schedule and handed the keys to the council and operator.

The 40,000 sq ft facility sits on a two-acre brownfield site off Lance Corporal Andrew Breeze Way, a new link road which runs parallel to the M67 in Tameside.

The building comprises an eight-lane, 25-metre swimming pool with seating for 150 spectators, a spa and thermal area including sauna and steam room, a fitness suite and ten-pin bowling alley.

The centre, which will be operated by Active Tameside, also features meeting rooms and multi-use studio space, with scope for outdoor events to be hosted on a 12,000 sq ft roof terrace.

The architect for the scheme is Pozzoni, which also recently delivered Alderley Sports Park, which opened its doors in November 2019.

The project is part of Tameside Council’s £20m investment into leisure resources in the area, and was developed with the help of a £1.5m grant from government body Sport England.

Joe Burnett, development director at Network Space, added: “Network Space has worked on the wider project for many years acquiring the land needed to deliver the project, securing essential infrastructure and more recently, facilitating the adjacent housing development.

“Delivering the final piece of the jigsaw is the icing on the cake.  The centre is an exceptional facility and we are confident it will have a huge and lasting positive impact on the people of Tameside.”
