The consultation into the masterplan for Stockport’s Town Centre West, a sizeable regeneration area which is set to include 3,500 homes, 1m sq ft of employment space and social infrastructure for tenants, is due to end on Friday.
The 20-year regeneration strategy has been formed alongside the site’s allocation as Greater Manchester’s first Mayoral Development Corporation.
The plans have been developed with Cushman & Wakefield, OPEN and WSP, and sets out the potential for around 3,500 homes of all types and tenures, along with amenity and social infrastructure needed for existing and future residents.
The framework proposes more than 1m sq ft of mixed employment space, an “urban riverside”, and a series of new and improved public spaces.
Set around five neighbourhoods, Weirside, Station Quarter, Stockport Exchange Business Quarter, Brinksway and Royal George Quarter, the SRF suggests the plan could lead to up to £530m of construction investment, and deliver development on 74 acres of brownfield land.
Key themes for the plan are community, innovation, and sustainability, as part of the council’s drive to deliver town centre living in Stockport.
In the SRF, Stockport Council said: “Public sector partners are actively working with existing landowners in the area to help bring forward sites for development and to access funding where possible. In cases where landowners are looking to bring forward development which is not in line with the SRF, the council and its partners may look to intervene more directly to ensure appropriate development is achieved.”
