GALLERY | Lancaster’s West Pavilion opens
Lancaster University Management School has opened the doors to its £24m extension, designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and delivered by John Turner Construction.
The 61,000 sq ft extension to the Management School, named the West Pavilion, is a five-storey building housing three lecture theatres, two executive teaching suites and three floors of workspace for academics and staff.
A large atrium and new reception area link the new building with the existing LUMS facilities. The delivery architect was Liverpool firm ABW Architects.
Andy Couling, partner at FCBStudios, said: “Lancaster University Management School’s West Pavilion will have a transformative affect upon the University and the Bailrigg campus.
“The new building It provides spaces for learning and teaching, gathering and meeting in a range of open and individual facilities and space that can adapt to changing patterns of education.“
Prof Angus Laing, dean of LUMS, said: “Planning for this project started before the pandemic, when our footprint simply wasn’t big enough for our fast-growing school.
“Now it is complete, we are in the fortunate position of boasting a modern and flexible facility which houses some of Lancaster’s largest lecture theatres, with large open spaces that can be used safely within current restrictions, as well as when normality resumes.
“We look forward to a time when students can return to study here on campus and benefit from these facilities as part of the full Lancaster experience.”
The second phase of LUMS’ redevelopment – a refurbishment of the existing management school building – is set to start in the course of 2022.
Laing added: “It is important that the refurbishment of the existing building ensures very highest standard of facilities are in place across the whole school, while being sympathetic to our heritage and the existing 1960s architecture.”
The professional team also included landscape desiger LT Studio and Buro Happold as structural and M&E engineer.
