GALLERY | Images of £20m Alder Hey expansion revealed
The winning designs by Cullinan Studio for a Community Cluster at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool have been released by RIBA, which ran the architectural competition for the project.
Alder Hey plans to relocate eight departments into the cluster in phases, including both clinical and non-clinical services, which are currently located across a number of buildings in the trust’s estate and across Liverpool.
The first phase would be the 26,000 sq ft Community Cluster to house two inpatient wards, three outpatient units, a school, and administrative support services.
The initial phase of the project has a total construction and design budget of £9m, and while the maximum potential contract value is £20m for all three phases, the trust has previously said funding “is not guaranteed” at present.
The design proposals developed by Cullinan Studio were selected from a shortlist which also included Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, Penoyre & Prasad and Reiach & Hall Architects.
According to RIBA, Cullinan Studio’s proposals “were felt to successfully combine the challenge of needing to address the clinical needs and privacy of patients in a non-institutional environment, as well as providing office accommodation that will encourage service user integration and agile methods of working”.
David Powell, development director of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital said: “The children and families who will use the new cluster development deserve a fantastic place in which to receive their assessment and treatment. The brilliant staff who provide their services are equally deserving. The Cullinan team have understood this and responded magnificently with a building of quality and imagination.”
