Hotel Chester, a £4.6m redevelopment project designed by the Frank Whittle Partnership, has opened its doors.

Situated on Newgate Street in the city centre, the hotel is part of family-run hotel business Walker & Williams, and is made up of 12 styled and themed apartments.

Preston-based FWP has led the restoration of the 1780s building and its redevelopment into a boutique aparthotel.

The building was previously used as offices and has been vacant for around 15 years. Development work has taken 18 months to complete and the new destination officially opened on 12 April, as Covid restrictions eased across England.

Each apartment in the scheme has a theme including one made up of two large living spaces connected by a floating bridge and a treehouse family apartment.

FWP has previously worked for Walker & Williams on projects including the Winckley Square Hotel in Preston, the city also being W&W’s home base.

The architect also has a live W&W project in Ormskirk involving the conversion of a former magistrates’ court into a five-star aparthotel with 23 apartments, a restaurant, and a cocktail bar; while the firms are also collaborating on a further Chester operation, a 52-bedroom hotel near Chester racecourse, which went in for planning in September 2020.

Brent Clayton, partner at FWP, said: “We have worked closely with Walker & Williams to produce something in Chester that is very, very special. It’s great to see the completed transformation of an historic building and the hotel open for business.

“We’ve built up a good relationship with the client and we understand their vision and ethos. It is about creating a real sense of luxury.

He added: “We’ve seen increasing interest from the hospitality and leisure sectors, as the industry looks to open up and respond to what is likely to be an ongoing trend towards domestic holidays.”
