Further flats proposed in Trafford

The boom in residential development is continuing around Old Trafford, with two applications lodged with Trafford Council that will add to housing numbers in the area.

Planning consultant England Lyle Good has applied for the conversion of Metropolitan House into 81 apartments under Permitted Development Rights.

The building on Brindley Road, off Chester Road close to the White City retail park, has an existing consent for 52 apartments, but developer Mandale Construction now intends to inset rooflights to enable development of the top floor.

The revised scheme, designed by SJD Architects, comprises 12 two-bedroom apartments and 69 one-bedroom apartments.

Nearby, Paul Butler Assocites has submitted an application on behalf of Beech Holdings for the conversion of the 8th and 9th floors of the west wing at West Point on Chester Road into 9 apartments.

The bulk of the 16-storey building was cleared for PDR conversion into 326 apartments in February this year, but as these floors had previously been changed to training and education, their conversion coulddn’t be included in that application.

I feel this really shouldn’t be approved – the fact that the proposal has gone from 52 apartments to 81 just tells me that once again we will end up with rabbit hutch size living spaces.
