Firms prosecuted following Manchester care home death

Two firms are to be prosecuted following the death of an elderly resident at a care home in Manchester, who was crushed under a heavy fire door.

Irene Sharples, 92, was living at Alexian Brothers Care Centre on St Mary's Road in Moston when the door fell on her during renovation work on 7 November 2010. She died just under four weeks later.

The Healthcare Management Trust, which runs the care home, and Rothwell Robinson Ltd, which was carrying out the building work, are both being prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive for breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The charge relates to failing to ensure the safety of Mrs Sharples, who suffered from dementia.

The Healthcare Management Trust, of Queen Anne's Gate in London, and Rothwell Robinson Ltd, of Holyoake Road in Worsley, are due to appear before Trafford Magistrates' Court on Friday 14 March for the first hearing in the case.
