Ferries move base while new landing stage built

Mersey Ferries will close its Pier Head landing stage on Monday and transfer operation to the Liverpool Cruise Liner facility at Princes Parade, a short walk from the Pier Head Ferry Terminal.

A new landing stage at the Pier Head terminal, being built by Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering, is scheduled to reopen in November 2011.

Merseytravel said when cruise liners are visiting the city, Mersey Ferries will not be able to use the facility and services will be suspended. Ferry tickets can be used, on these occasions, on trains between Hamilton Square and James Street.

A temporary ferry landing stage has been used since the last one sank in freak weather in early 2006.

The new landing stage is one of the final pieces in the redeveloped Pier Head, which has seen a new ferry terminal building, a new link canal link and extensive public realm. The new Museum of Liverpool by National Museums Liverpool will open in 2011.
