Exhibition for £25m Carlisle academy next week

Cumbria County Council has received planning proposals for a new £25m Richard Rose Morton Academy in Carlisle.

An exhibition will be held in the new theatre space at the Wigton Road school on 2 September for residents to see and comment on the plans by developer Kier.

Some residents have already complained to Kier and local councillors prior to the application being submitted about proposals for an 18-metre high wind turbine.

Plans include a large theatre, an art studio, a roof garden and facilities to be used for manufacturing and engineering purposes.

The new academy will replace the former Morton School buildings, which has housed the academy since it opened 12 months ago.

The council's development control committee is expected to consider the proposals in November with a view to work starting in February 2010.

If successful and on track, the new building is expected to open in 2011.

The exhibition will be open between 4pm and 8pm.
