Eric Wright hands over £13.5m leisure centre

Eric Wright Construction has completed a 62-week build programme at the sports and swimming complex in Blackburn town centre.

The new facility, commissioned by Blackburn with Darwen Council and Blackburn College, contains two sports halls, an 80-station fitness gym, separate aerobics and spinning studios, 25-metre swimming pool, training pool and water fun zone, new flumes and a sports science performance and testing laboratory.

The complex replaced the 26-year-old Waves Water Fun Centre, which will be demolished and the site sold by the council for development.

The project team included DLA Architecture and Desco Engineering Consultancy, whose design has halved the running costs compared to the old recreation centre.

The facility was opened to the public by Olympic double gold medallist freestyle swimmer Rebecca Adlington.
