Engie gears up to start 266 Kirkby homes

The regeneration specialist, with affordable housing provider Your Housing Group, will start construction of a £37m residential scheme on Whitefield Drive this month.

The development, known as Whitefield Brook, won planning permission from Knowsley Council in July. It will comprise 266 houses across a range of tenures – 106 106 will be shared ownership, 115 will be for affordable rent and 45 will be for private rent.

The scheme will provide a mix of two-, three- and four-bedroom units in a landscaped setting close to Your Housing Group’s existing Kirkby Brook development.

The project is being led by the Warrington-based housing provider in partnership with Engie. The architect is Eden Building Design, and the first homes are due to complete in 2022.

The 16-acre brownfield site used to house the former sports centre off Whitefield Drive and was once tipped to house a 50,000-capacity stadium for Everton FC. But it has lain derelict for years.

The project has been funded through YHG’s strategic partnership with government body Homes England, through which the housing provider received £87.5m.

Pete Hayes, head of land and partnerships at Engie, said: “Engie and YHG have worked tirelessly over the past two years to help bring in to use this challenging and derelict brownfield site.

“By combining Engie’s technical and design expertise with YHG’s passion for creating homes and sustainable communities, the organisations have collaborated to produce a housing offer that Kirkby can be proud of and that will enable flexibility of tenure for our customers.”

Jacque Allen, chief operating officer of Your Housing Group, added: “We have ambitious plans to continue delivering much-needed homes across our region in uncertain times.

“We are really pleased to be able to start work in Kirkby to transform this derelict site into fantastic new homes for the area.”
