Dobbies Garden Centre planned near airport

Tesco-owned garden centre group Dobbies has acquired an eight-acre site in south Liverpool from Peel to build an £8m outlet.

The Dobbies Garden World development on the corner of Speke Boulevard and the road to the airport will be built from sustainably-sourced timber and will include a range of environmentally-friendly features including energy efficient lighting systems and extensive rainwater recycling.

As well as selling 10,000 plants, shrubs and trees there will be a farm foodhall offering locally-grown produce from Merseyside and Cheshire, as well as a restaurant with freshly-prepared meals and home baking.

Stuart Wright, director of property at Dobbies, said: "Our Speke Garden World will bring over 120 jobs to Liverpool and will encourage an environmentally-friendly approach to 21st Century living where all the family can enjoy planting and growing."

An exhibition on the Dobbies proposals will be held at the Parklands City Learning Centre (Parklands Library, adjacent to Morrisons), Conleach Road,Parklands, Speke on Wednesday 2 June 2010 from 2pm – 8pm.
