DEVO DIARY: On your marks

Hedging his bets Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson announced his intention to stand as Labour MP for Liverpool Walton. If elected, Anderson would replace Steve Rotheram who will step down as MP for the constituency if he wins the Mayoral contest on 4 May. Rotheram beat Anderson to be the Labour candidate in the Mayoral elections, perhaps Anderson is hoping that standing to be MP in Labour-voting Liverpool Walton is a safer bet. Anderson will remain Liverpool Mayor until, and if, he is elected as MP, when it is understood that he will resign, triggering a by-election for the position.

Hotly-contested Chester is one of the most marginal seats in the country, with a Labour majority of just 93 votes, which equates to a difference of just 0.1% between Labour and Conservatives. Both parties are expected to campaign heavily in the constituency, but perhaps it would be wise not to forget about the Liberal Democrats which had a 21% share of the vote in 2010. This fell to under 6% in the 2015 election but with the party rising once again in the polls their ability to affect results should not be underestimated.

A fly-by visit to Bolton was made by Theresa May on Wednesday. Arriving into Egerton by helicopter, she launched the Conservative’s general election campaign. Unfortunately, not everyone seemed convinced, in a video captured and posted to twitter by ITV political correspondent, Daniel Hewitt, a resident was seen throwing two fingers up and shouting an expletive-laden rant at the Prime Minister. Perhaps a majority Labour seat wasn’t the best place to launch the Conservative campaign after all.

Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Farron takes realism too far in his party election broadcast, which shows a couple so obsessed with the news it is heard continuously over each morning routine, spoken ominously through every device in the house like some sort of Orwellian nightmare. The campaign video ends when one of the couple fails to recognise the Lib Dem leader, despite the barrage of news she grimaces at each morning. Unfortunately for Farron this perhaps rings unintentionally of truth.
