Hattersley District Centre aerial

Developer named on Hattersley retail scheme

Peak Valley Housing Association has appointed Maple Grove Developments, part of Eric Wright Group, to deliver the 75,000 sq ft retail-led Hattersley District Centre, Tameside.

The development in Stockport Road will be made up of 14 units, including an anchor foodstore and a drive-through restaurant. The site is predominantly cleared brownfield land.

An outline planning application was approved at the beginning of 2015. Maple Grove said that it would begin to prepare detailed designs, to be presented to the community “at the earliest opportunity”.

Bilfinger GVA has been appointed property advisor.

Peak Valley Housing Association has been working with partners Tameside Council and the Homes & Communities Agency to deliver the scheme.

Oh for goodness sake. A retail park with acres of car parking is NOT a district centre. I wish housing associations and local councils would abandon this outdated model for regenerating local neighbourhoods. It may be easy, it may be cheap but it adds little value compared to a more intensively developed site incorporating mixed uses and proper public realm.

A very good idea, it will bring jobs to the area. For such a large housing estate, it will give the residents an ideal way to shop, rather than travelling to other areas such as Hyde, Denton etc.

This will be great for the area, it will bring jobs & all can shop locally, saving travelling cost.

Jobs could have been brought to the area by providing shops in a form that is mixed with housing and proper public realm; a place for people to linger and meet and with a real sense of place rather than a few bog standard retail sheds and acres of barren car parking.

The approach chosen here is lazy and dated, adding little of real value to the community – sadly typical for the UK though. The promoters of this project should be ashamed – a “neighbourhood centre” it most certainly is not!
