Designs released for Calderstones Reading Centre

National charity the Reader Organisation has released details of its designs for the refurbishment of the grade two-listed Calderstones Mansion House within Calderstones Park in South Liverpool (GALLERY).

Work on the three-year project will encompass the Calderstones Mansion House, Coach House, Stable Yard and grounds. The charity will use the Mansion House as its headquarters and will also establish an international hub for shared reading practice, training and academic research. The proposals include meeting rooms, activity and workshop studios, a bistro, conference, events and training facilities, gardens, gallery and a bookshop.

The Reader Organisation appointed architecture and planning practice Cass Associates in October 2013 to provide feasibility studies and put together detailed proposals for the scheme, including planning and listed building applications as part of an application for Lottery funding.

A planning application for the scheme is expected to be submitted by autumn 2014.

The Reader Organisation took the premises on a long leasehold from Liverpool City Council in August 2013 and is working with local partners Mersey Care NHS, Plus Dane Group and the University of Liverpool's centre for research into reading, information and linguistic systems to prepare for the stage two HLF bid.

Cass Associates said that "the key objectives are to bring the buildings back fully into use in a way which gives them a sustainable, long term future, provides accommodation for the Reader Organisation and enables the buildings to contribute as fully as possible to the use and character of the Park."
