Place North West has joined forces with Places Matter! and Hill Dickinson to carry out an independent and impartial architectural review of five high-profile developments completed in the region in recent years.
Three members of Places Matter!'s design review panel carried out site visits to study the buildings before offering their views on the five buildings.

The reviewers were Rachel Haugh, principal director of Ian Simpson Architects, Martin Stockley of consulting engineers Martin Stockley Associates and chairman of the design review panel and independent landscape architect Annie Coombs.
Annie Atkins, programme director of Places Matter!, said: "Places Matter! provides design advice to a wide range of projects in a variety of scenarios. In addition to the regular design review panels we're also working on design competitions, we sit on a variety of award panels, and we're providing strategic advice and design training to various local authorities. Our approach is to be flexible and light touch, providing design input as appropriate to local priorities throughout the North West."
For the design review feature published today the panel members unusually looked at completed buildings as an exercise in showing what the service can offer. The five buildings happened to be in Liverpool and Chester for ease of viewing but the service reviews throughout the North West.
The 41-strong design review panel at Places Matter! has reviewed over 180 projects in the North West for clients, architects and developers, establishing itself as a respected sounding board for designs. Ideally this would happen as early as possible in the process.
More than 90% of people presenting their designs to the panel make changes following the review session. Consultants Amion estimated that 2% was added to the value of projects as a result of the independent and constructive advice they received.
