Demolition of former Guardian Printworks to start

Having bought the Trafford Park site for £7.5m last November, DTZ Investors is pushing ahead with plans to build a 140,000 sq ft warehouse on the seven-acre plot on behalf of its client, Strathclyde Pension Fund. 

Trafford Council has given the pension fund the green light to commence demolition of the 238,000 sq ft Longbridge Road unit, which used to house the Guardian newspaper’s printing press. 

Plans for the redevelopment of the site, lodged in April, include the construction of a single large warehouse unit with a two-storey office block attached.  

The facility would also feature a 15-dock loading bay 137 car parking spaces. The scheme is being led by DTZI, Strathclyde’s investment manager. 

Birmingham-based contractor DSM Group will carry out the demolition of the print works, constructed in 1986 and used by the Guardian until January 2018. 

Michael Sparks Associates is the planner and architect for the redevelopment of the site. Barry Chinn Associates is the landscape architect. 

In February, Swedish manufacturer Lindab leased a 65,000 sq ft new build unit at DTZI’s Ashburton Point development nearby.
