Demolition attempts continue at Seaforth tower

Residents of around 70 houses in Seaforth, Merseyside, are still unable to return to their homes after the planned controlled collapse of a 14-storey vacant block of flats nearby was unsuccessful.

One Vision Housing received planning permission earlier this year to demolish Montgomery House and Churchill House, with J Bryan appointed to carry out a controlled demolition on both buildings simultaneously.

However, while the collapse of both buildings was scheduled for 10.30am on Sunday 24 April, only the demolition of Churchill was successful, after an initial failed attempt.

The contractor tried to demolish Montgomery House again on Monday 25 April, which also failed.

Those living within close proximity to the tower blocks were due to leave their homes for only a short period on demolition day, however are now being temporarily accommodated in hotels.

There are currently no plans to build on the sites of Churchill House and Montgomery House at Kings Park, but the plot will be made safe, levelled and turfed.

A statement from One Vision Housing released on Monday evening said: “The most recent update from the appointed demolition contractor, J. Bryan (Victoria) Ltd, is that they are planning to carry out a phased demolition of the remaining structure of Montgomery House.

“One Vision Housing is doing everything it can to ensure that those residents affected by the ongoing exclusion zone (circa 70 properties) are being made as comfortable as possible with hotel accommodation, food, drink and other provisions. One Vision Housing staff continue to be in attendance at the hotels to ensure that those residents have the relevant support and access to information.”
