December sales up 21% at Liverpool One, says Grosvenor

Grosvenor said it is enjoying record footfall at Liverpool One. Total footfall for week ending 11 December was 739,100 – the first time since opening it has exceeded 700,000.

The figure is a 41% increase on the same period in 2008. Sales are also up on the same time as last year showing a rise of 21%. Grosvenor measures footfall with electronic counters over every doorway in the 160-shop retail district and insists on daily sales updates from tenants.

The positive results are on the back of a succession of new store openings over the last five weeks including Habitat, Whistles, Hollister, Jaeger and local jeweller David M Robinson.

Liverpool One wheelEstate director Chris Bliss said: "There is no denying 2009 has been a difficult year for the retail sector as a whole but we have worked hard on our offering at Liverpool One to ensure a great retail and leisure offering.

"We have also looked to offer visitors something extra each time they visit, from the family entertainment programme over the summer to chocolate week earlier in the year and most recently with the Ice Palace and the Liverpool One Wheel.

"We're getting positive feedback from our retailers too, John Lewis in particular have experienced a great quarter four with very healthy sales.

"We've been particularly pleased with the Peters Lane, which now has a very strong offering of high quality fashion and accessory brands and we have more openings planned for the first quarter of 2010, which is great for Liverpool One and for the city as a whole."

Good news.

Hopefully other retailers will now see their error in holding back from the city for so long.

This should definitely strengthen the arm of any landlord seeking tenants in the city centre. In particular it should help Grosvenor finish their work on Hanover Street.
