Cycle centre given go-ahead

Plans to build an outdoor velodrome and BMX track in Knowsley have been approved.

The track will be constructed on the same site as the new leisure and culture park on Longview Drive in Huyton.

The velodrome will be 400m in length, with a 7m wide cycle track. The BMX track will be sited in the centre of the velodrome.

The new facility is due to be open in the autumn 2011 and is expected to attract in excess of 10,000 users a year, hosting a range of local, regional and national cycling events. It will also create an opportunity for Knowsley to form a new cycling club.

Cllr Eddie Connor, cabinet member for leisure, community and culture, said: "This is fantastic news for Knowsley's residents and further enhances leisure and sporting facilities available in the borough. We are always looking to provide the best facilities in Knowsley and hopefully this unique community facility will inspire future generations of riders."
