Cumbria reshuffle creates four new quangos

The latest attempt to deliver regeneration in Cumbria this week heralded in four new publicly-backed vehicles for Barrow, Carlisle, Eden and South Lakeland and West Cumbria.

The new agencies came into effect on 1 April and will operate as divisions of Cumbria Vision, the sub-regional element of the North West Development Agency. Each will have its own board and management, due to be announced in the coming weeks.

West Cumbria will replace the West Lakes Renaissance urban regeneration company run by Bob Pointing and will not have URC status.

The new Barrow board will include members of the old West Lakes Renaissance and Barrow Task Force boards.

The move is designed to kick-start developments across the wider county, which has so far produced only sporadic regeneration success with completed schemes in Barrow and West Cumbria under West Lakes Renaissance.

Cumbria Vision declined to comment until the board announcements are made.
