CUBE to display urban art competition winners

CUBE, the built environment-themed art gallery and shop on Portland Street, Manchester, is to hold its second open submission exhibition in August.

Fourteen artists were selected for this year's exhibition and the overall winner is local artist Andrea Brooker who creates brightly coloured signs that aim to highlight our awareness of social conditioning. She will also be artist in residence at CUBE in 2009 and receive a bursary of £1,000 to support her practice.

Other artists include Cath Cambell, Noel Clueit, Jo Lathwood, Vicki Thornton, Deirdre Feeney, David Gilroy, Julika Gittner, Eszter Takacs, Martine Rourke, Karen M Strom, Sarah Bayliss, David Wightman and Becky Hunt.

Highlights include 'Greensleaves', an animation by David Theobald, which humorously depicts traffic congestion, and Thomas O Grady's video installation inspired by the Manchester Evening News.

The exhibition runs from 2 August to 6 September.
