Cube plans 130 homes for Gorton
Cube, the private sector arm of Great Places Housing Group, has acquired a site on Melland Road in Gorton, Manchester, with plans to build 131 homes.
The plot was sold by the Greater Manchester Trust for Recreation.
The Gorton project will be Cube’s largest so far. A planning application has been submitted for a range of two-, three- and four-bedroom detached and semi-detached properties, available for sale, shared ownership, and private rent.
Work is set to begin on the scheme in the summer. Seddon has been appointed as the main contractor.
The first sales are forecast for early 2018.
Ben Townsend, head of private sector development at Great Places, said: “The scale of the Melland Road development is indicative of Cube’s aspirations. Not only will the site provide over 130 quality homes for sale and private rent, the profits generated will be of great benefit in supporting Great Places’ wider work in communities.
“We are keen to build on the success of last year and increase our output in high demand areas, particularly across Greater Manchester, and remain in the market for opportunities for market sale and rent. We have ambitious plans for this arm of the organisation and the acquisition of Melland Road is a bold step in the right direction.”
Great, more low density houses. Just what we need to solve the housing crisis and avoid building on the green belt….

Oh dear. Great Places behaving like a volume house builder here, churning out twee low density identikit boxes. We need more sustainable, higher density, more distinctive, walkable communities – what of GP’s social purpose? Manchester deserves better.

Great idea because that land space was sitting there empty for many years. It would benefit many working families like myself who just want to live in a nice house. Gorton has its reputation but from what I can see living here for 9 years, is that it’s not that bad of an area to live and you see the most down to earth citizens residing here. Even the ones classed as ‘bad people’ aren’t that bad afterall.
I really hope I get one of them properties… 🙂 fingers crossed..

Being a resident on the Sutton Estate that borders Melland Road, I am deeply concerned about the volume of traffic that these house will add to an already extremely busy road, that caters for two schools. First thing in the morning and mid afternoo It becomes gridlocked. What plans are there in place to prevent further inconvenience to existing tenants in this area.
