Liverpool City Council's cabinet this morning approved plans for compulsory purchase orders to be used as a last resort to clear the way for new homes to be built by Bellway in the Edge Lane area.
The CPO would be used to acquire 120 commercial and residential properties in Marmaduke Street, Martensen Street, Cicely Street, Winifred Street, and Wavertree Road.
The council controversially demolished 370 Victorian houses on the busy Edge Lane route into the city centre before the credit crunch following a decade-long legal battle with local objectors. Several sites remain cleared with new houses yet to be built on them. Bellway plans 450 new homes in the area.
The council said talks with property owners were ongoing.
