Council approves new stadium for Morecambe FC

Lancaster City Council planning committee today approved plans for a 7,000-capacity stadium to be built in Westgate, Morecambe for the town's football club.

The decision will now be referred to the Government Office for the North West to decide if it will be called in for a public inquiry. The referral is due to the development's size and proprietary issues as the council owns the land on which the new ground would be built.

The new ground, replacing Christie Park, will include eight restaurants, a 55-bed budget hotel and community sports facilities.

Pending GONW's approval, the League 2 club hopes to be on site in May 2009 with a view to beginning the 2010/11 season in its new ground.

Bury-based Maze Planning Solutions, Manchester architects the Harris Partnership and Lancaster engineering consultant RG Parkins all advised the club.
