Contractors named on last of Big Dig work

Liverpool City Council has appointed three new framework contractors for its city centre movement strategy: North Midland Construction, D Morgan and Galliford Try Infrastructure.

The three-year framework agreement will include contracts to upgrade and regenerate key city centre streets, including the Castle Street pedestrianisation scheme, with work on both highways and public realm. The estimated total value of the framework over three years is £20m.

The council's city centre movement strategy, dubbed the Big Dig, has spent £70m since 2003 realigning roads and redirecting traffic, to a mixed reception from residents and businesses.

Work on the new schemes will begin in 2010 and further announcements about the schemes will be made when the schemes are sufficiently developed.
