The final round of consultation around a masterplan for 5,300 homes in North West Preston has begun, with local councillors asking the public to help shape “the finer points of detail” of what development will happen and where.
Covering the Bartle, Cottam, Fulwood, Ingol and Woodplumpton areas of Preston, the masterplan is proposing a Garden city type project which could deliver 5,300 homes over the next 20 years, alongside public transport links, cycling routes, new schools, new community facilities, parks and green spaces.
The plans were first proposed in 2013, and in February 2014 a masterplan for the development on the North West Preston area was approved, which included indicative guidance on how to bring forward development
However, the plan has now been updated to include design guidance, and the council is consulting on where the projects could be located and built. The masterplan would be a supplementary document to the adopted Preston Local Plan.
The consultation will be open until Friday 12 August.
Cllr John Swindells, deputy leader of Preston City Council, said: “The development of the North West Preston area is set out in the local plan and supporting planning policies. However, the masterplan has now been updated to provide more detailed design guidance for developers to show what is expected for development on the new link road corridor. It’s not just for new houses but also new schools, transport links, community facilities, parks and open spaces.
“All these are vital to sustainable and thriving communities that are fit for our children and grandchildren to live and grow up in. The aim is to require developers to build to high design standards and to show what can be achieved, so that the area will become an attractive garden suburb of Preston where local people want to live.”
Jim Carter, chairman of the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal, added: “This masterplan aims to ensure that future developments are carried out in a joined-up and responsible way.
“The North West Preston area is a fundamental part of the future success of City Deal.
“Work is currently taking place on the Broughton Bypass and plans have been submitted for the new Preston Western Distributor road, including a new motorway junction on the M55, which will directly benefit local people.”
