Construction of Cheshire Cheese flats begins

Developer Northhold Group has appointed contractor ABGI Construction to build Deluna, a 38-apartment scheme on the site of a former pub on Oldham Road in Manchester.

Designed by AEW Architects, plans for the seven-storey block were approved by Manchester City Council two years ago and work can finally start on site following the demolition of the 19th century Cheshire Cheese pub this year.

The pub closed in 2005, but has only just been knocked down despite consent being granted for its demolition in 2004. Northhold bought the Ancoats site from Homes England in 2015.

The Deluna scheme will feature a mix of one- and two-bedroom flats, as well as a shop at ground floor level. The developer expects construction to complete in December 2021.

Vanessa Warbrick, development director at Northhold Group, said: “This is a prime site in one of Manchester’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, so it’s great to finally get works underway and see the building demolished.

“It’s the final piece of the puzzle in the transformation of Ancoats, so it’s exciting to see Deluna taking shape and returning the site to positive use.”

The professional team includes WSP as the transport consultant and Edgeplan as the planner.
