Construction begins on £19m Lancaster University expansion
Work has started on the £18.8m extension of Lancaster University Management School, with contractor John Turner Construction expecting to complete the five-storey building for the 2020/21 academic year.
Prof. Mark E Smith, vice-chancellor, said: “Our management school is home to a thriving international community – one that continues to grow year on year. This significant investment will provide state of the art facilities to complement the first class teaching and world-renowned research that we are proud to offer our students.”
The 61,000 sq ft building, known as the West Pavilion, will include three lecture theatres, collaboration space, a reception, multiple offices and an executive teaching suite.
Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios was the concept design architect, with ABW engaged as project delivery architect. Curtins was the concept structural engineer, with Thomasons being responsible for project delivery. The professional team also includes Identity Consult as project manager, SDA Consulting as cost manager and Hoare Lee as M&E advisor

Nigel Sharp, operations director at Preston-based John Turner, said: “As a leading regional contractor, we are delighted to be awarded this high profile LUMS project and to be working with one of the highest ranking universities of the North.”
Prof. Angus Laing, dean of LUMS, said that the completion of the new building will be followed by a refurbishment of existing facilities. He added: “As one of the first business schools established in the UK, we have a proud history of pushing boundaries and conventions to challenge our students and prepare them to become our future leaders.”
The new building will be located next to the Management School and Gillow Avenue on Lancaster University’s Bailrigg campus.
