Consent nears for pair of Salford industrial schemes
Aluminium and steel stockholder Richard Austin Alloys’ plans for a 37,000 sq ft complex at Northbank Industrial Estate in Irlam, and a Peel L&P recycling facility off Liverpool Road in Eccles are both tipped for approval.
Richard Austin Alloys bought a 2.2-acre plot at Northbank from local landowner North Cheshire Developments for £730,000 in 2018 and wants to redevelop the site into a 33,000 sq ft storage and distribution unit and 4,000 sq ft office.
Subject to planning approval from Salford City Council, the firm would relocate to Northbank, between Cadishead Way and Brinall Road, from its existing regional headquarters off Bessemer Road in Irlam, as part of an expansion strategy.
Agency Lambert Smith Hampton, which represented the company in the sale, is the planning consultant for the development. Richard Austin Alloys was founded in 1981 and has sites in Leeds, Bristol and Glasgow.
Material produced at the recycling facility would be used for the construction of Port Salford
Peel L&P Environmental, a subsidiary of the developer, is seeking consent to build a facility to recycle mineral waste and excavation soil materials into usable sand and aggregates for construction purposes.
The aggregate produced will be used in the ongoing construction of Peel’s Port Salford development, according to the company. Once Port Salford completes, the facility would be removed, according to a planning statement prepared by consultancy WSP.
The 9.7-acre site north of the Manchester Ship Canal and west of the AJ Bell Stadium lies within the wider 310-acre Port Salford development area, and is vacant.
The facility, capable of recycling around 240,000 tonnes of material a year, would be operational by 2021, subject to planning approval.
Bate and Taylor Architects designed the facility.
How are we going to cope with all this extra traffic? The roads are busy enough without another 500 trucks a day!

How are the waste materials being delivered to the site for recycling? Train lines in the original plans for the Port Salford area are not yet laid in. Further road use with the subsequent congestion and pollution?
