Congleton leisure centre overhaul moves forward

Cheshire East Council has submitted a planning application for a redevelopment programme at Congleton Leisure Centre.

The plans include the demolition of the existing swimming pool hall and its supporting facilities, to be replaced by a new six-lane swimming pool, new learner pool and facilities, along with an extensive interior remodelling to create community meeting spaces, a soft play area with access to a café and a gym with facilities over two floors.

Increased facilities for disabled centre users will be introduced, while the existing three squash courts will be reduced to one.

Locally-based leisure sector specialist Pulse Design & Build is the council’s development partner on the project, with CBW Architectural Design engaged as architect. Ivy House Environmental is also on the professional team.

The centre in Worrall Street dates back to 1973, and has, said CBW, received only minor refurbishment since.

The extension does mean a loss of open space, although the adjacent rugby pitch is to be retained. CBW said that the council is working with Congleton Rugby Club and other users to maximise the use of green space, potentially including the centre’s overflow parking area.

Cllr Liz Wardlaw, deputy leader of CEC and cabinet member for health, said: “I’m pleased we are moving forward with our plans for Congleton’s leisure centre. The current facilities are not fit for purpose and I hope that people will share my excitement in the new proposals that have been submitted to planning.

“I encourage anyone with an interest in the plans for the leisure centre to come along to the drop-in sessions to find out more.”

Drop-in events are scheduled to be held at the leisure centre on:

  • Tuesday 22 January, 6pm-8pm
  • Thursday 24 January, 6pm-8pm
  • Saturday 26 January, 9:30am-11:30am
  • Tuesday 29 January 9:30am to noon
  • Wednesday 30 January, 9:30am-noon.

The application will be considered in March.

This is excellent news and great for Congleton. I pass on the words of my 3 year old son. “I can’t wait to be swimming in the new pool Daddy and the soft play sounds good too”…..”you can enjoy a coffee”! Here’s to a swift positive decision on Planning and rapid implementation and delivery of what looks to be a great scheme.
