Co-op fills retail void at MediaCityUK

Booths closed earlier this year citing the impact of Covid-19 on sales and Co-op is now poised to take over the 7,500 sq ft store.

Co-op Estates has lodged a planning application to replace signage on the former Booths unit, and the company is close to penning a lease on the MediaCityUK store, Place North West understands.

The shop is located opposite Glenbrook’s 280-home Broadway Square development, which is under construction.

The store would be Co-op’s fifth in Salford, adding to sites at Clippers Quay, Middlewood Locks, Chapel Street, and Ordsall Lane.

Preston-based Booths was the first retailer to open at the MediaCityUK site a decade ago. The company announced in January that it intended to close thatsite, putting 62 jobs at risk.

A statement released at the time said: “Booths has worked hard to refine the offer at Media City to make it relevant to the local community, but the store has accumulated significant losses since it opened in 2011.

“Over the past nine months the store has also been affected by the impacts of home-working due to Coronavirus with a significant reduction in customer visits and sales.”

Booths operates 27 stores across Lancashire, Cumbria, Cheshire and Yorkshire.

Chris Moss, Co-op acquisition manager, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to open a new convenience store to serve the MediaCityUK community. Co-op is committed to operating at the heart of local life, and we are working to develop the range, choice, products and added services locally that I am confident will create a really compelling offer to serve the local community.”

Chris Reay, property director for MediaCityUK said: “We are delighted that Co-op will be joining our MediaCityUK community. The Co-op Group has continuously proven to have a positive impact on local communities, and they are the ideal partner to meet our ever-growing residential, worker and visitor community demand.”

That’s a shame! That was my highlight going to Booth’s when working at Media City! Fantastic shop! Bet the bread and the wine at Co-op wont be a patch on Booths! I really thought it would have done well round there!

It’s amazing how the Co-op has stealthily pushed their brand and food offer into more affluent segments and locations.

This should be a nice complement to the more ‘artisan’ offerings at the recently opened and nearby General Store. It’s nice to have choice.

There’s rumours Greggs and Philpotts sandwiches are going upstairs

Actually, I’ve changed my mind. Just realised the nearby General Store is supplied by Coop so it isn’t a choice at all
