Cityco photography show begins

Amateur photographers' work will go on display tomorrow for a three-week exhibition organised by the city centre management company.

The free show opens to the public in the Triangle shopping centre and will display images taken by some of the 112 people who took part in Manchester's first Open City photography day, held in May.

Cityco aims "to promote Manchester as an open and accessible photography destination, encouraging amateur and professional photographers to take to the streets to capture the essence of our wonderful city."

Five renowned Manchester photographers – Aidan O'Rourke, Andrew Brooks, Len Grant, Paul Herrmann and Mark Page – held workshops in Manchester city centre with a group of enthusiastic amateurs and the free exhibition reveals the results.

Vaughan Allen, chief executive of Cityco, said: "The open city photography day was a huge success. We had great weather and a fantastic turnout. The exhibition is a celebration of Manchester through the lens. If it inspires more people to take up photography and capture the essence of our wonderful city, then together we'll have achieved something really special. I'm very grateful to all those that took part."

Len Grant said: "People should come down and have a look at what was produced on that lovely sunny afternoon back in May. The standard of photography was incredibly high. There are so many varying styles creating some truly stunning shots. I'm sure visitors will be impressed with what they find, and each will have their favourites."

Michelle Atack, Marketing Manager for the Triangle shopping centre said: "We're really pleased to host this exhibition as we're always looking for ways to add value to our shopping experience. As Mancunians we are all very proud of our city and this really comes across in the pictures on display. I'm sure this is going to be a popular attraction for visitors to the centre in the coming weeks."

The exhibition was built by Astra Signs and is open 10am to 6pm from 9 to 29 July.
