Cautioned leader Leese returns to role

Sir Richard Leese has been reinstated as Manchester City Council leader after temporarily stepping down from the role.

Within a brief statement issued by the council today, it said: "The Leader of Manchester City Council, Sir Richard Leese, has returned to his duties after taking time out for personal reasons."

Leese was arrested last month and cautioned for assaulting his sixteen year old stepdaughter.

Last night, he was backed to continue as the Labour group leader by the party, which kept hold of the city council in the local elections on 6 May, and he will be re-elected as council leader next week.
