Carrington’s £100m regeneration approved

Himor Group has been granted planning permission by Trafford Council to develop the first phase of homes and commercial space at the 1,655-acre former Shell refinery.

The council approved the Future Carrington scheme at its meeting on Thursday 13 April, and subject to a legal agreement, Himor hopes to start on site by the end of the year.

Carrington was due to be discussed at an earlier meeting on 30 March but was deferred, in order to allow councillors time to consider a detailed objection from Peel Holdings, which is building the nearby Western Gateway link road. Peel said that a condition should be in place to ensure that no residents could move into the site until after the completion of its road, to reduce pressure on local road networks.

The outline application was split between two elements; one for Common Lane which sought consent to build up to 500,000 sq ft of commercial space, and one for Carrington Village, which includes 750 homes and another 500,000 sq ft of commercial. The scheme also includes a village centre, parks and a rugby club.

Detailed planning applications are due to be submitted later this year, focusing on bringing forward buildings on plots along Manchester Road.

Himor is in the process of appointing an architect and contractor. According to the developer, interested housebuilders have also already been identified. The project team so far includes Spawforths, Arup, Regeneris, Aecom, Tyler Grange and Pinsent Masons.
