Bridge opens at Weavers’ Triangle

Development partners Barnfield Construction and Burnley Council have finished installing the new Sandygate footbridge between different parts of the Weavers' Triangle development.

The £300,000 50-metre long footbridge, clad in glass and weathered steel, was designed by Roger Westbrook and spans the Leeds Liverpool Canal between the new University Technical College and the town centre.

The footbridge incorporates LED lighting in the handrails, creating a "blade of light" across the mixed-use canalside development.

Sandygate Bridge links directly onto the new Sandygate Square, which includes a new amphitheatre and canalside terrace, for which a unique launch is being planned for early in 2015.

Tim Webber, Barnfield's managing director, said: "This is another major milestone in a highly technical and difficult project that has delivered some fantastic outcomes in a difficult market."

The On the Banks Development and wider Weavers' Triangle masterplan received funding from the European Regional Development Fund and Regional Growth Fund.
