Bolton’s BSF survivors get planning

Sheppard Robson's design for the £35m Bolton St Catherine's Academy and Firwood School has received planning permission.

Working with contractor Kier, Sheppard Robson was appointed as architect on the Bolton Academies Programme to design the 180,000 sq ft academy, following its work on Bolton's Essa Academy, the first Bolton Academies Programme scheme.

Both the Essa and St Catherine's/Firwood school project are approved by Government and unaffected by the latest cuts to the Building Schools for the Future programme. However, only these two projects were unaffected; another academy is under review and seven schools were stopped by the Treasury on Monday.

The Academy, due to complete in 2012, will provide places for 1,160 students, and is sponsored by Crossland Academies and the Church of England.
