Bolton market named best in Britain

Bolton's indoor market has been named the best in Britain, according to the National Association of British Market Authorities.

The market, located in Ashburner Street, was given the accolade at an NABMA Building Better Markets conference in Birmingham yesterday.

Cllr Ismail Ibrahim, executive member for environmental services at Bolton Council, said: "This award is such an honour and it's a real credit to traders, customers and staff. The unique atmosphere and shopping experience the market offers, together with the good quality, fresh produce at a low price make it an unmissable stop when you're in town. We are absolutely delighted, but not at all surprised, that Bolton is home to the best indoor market."

Bolton Council praised an in-house cookery demonstration kitchen, which it believes has caused the market's popularity to grow.

The kitchen was also singled out for acclaim by the judges who recognised the work being done through the facility to encourage healthy eating campaigns.

Celebrity chefs including the Hairy Bikers have cooked up dishes for the public to try in the kitchen, and more events are being programmed for the year.

Bolton's market was also highlighted last year as an example for struggling markets to follow by the Retail Markets Alliance.

More than 2.5m people visit the market annually, which sells everything from fish to fabric, gifts and plants.

  • The indoor and outdoor market is open Tuesday and Thursday to Saturday, 9am-5pm. The car boot market is open Sunday, 7.30am-2pm
