Work has been halted at Circle Square on Manchester’s Oxford Road after a dead body was found at the site on Monday morning.
Wates is the main contractor, building student accommodation blocks for Select Property Group at the former BBC site. Staff are understood to have found the body when they came into work.
A Wates spokesperson said: “We can confirm that there has been an incident involving a member of the public on our site on Oxford Road in Manchester and our thoughts are with the family at this time.
“We are cooperating fully with the authorities to establish the circumstances which led to the incident.”
The cause of death has not been confirmed, but is not thought to be suspicious. Two fire engines attended the scene earlier today, along with Greater Manchester Police’s forensic team.
A statement from Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly before 7:50am on Monday 8 May 2017, police were called to reports that a body had been found on Oxford Road in Manchester city centre.
“Officers attended and discovered the body of a 19-year-old man.
“There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”
A Select Property Group spokesperson, said: “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family of the individual at this time. We will continue to work with the police and relevant authorities as they continue their investigation.”
