Blackpool town centre flats tipped for nod

A revised application for a block of 19 apartments on the site of the former Pizza Express restaurant next to the Winter Gardens is earmarked for council approval.

The five-storey apartment building would be constructed on the corner of Church Street and Abingdon Street.

The development would comprise 11 two-bedroom apartments and eight with one bedroom.

Pizza Express closed last year and the building has since been converted into Vintro Lounge, a restaurant that opened in June.

However, under the proposals lodged by a vehicle called Blackpool (Church Street) headed up by director Daniel Berko, the existing building would be demolished to make way for the apartment scheme.

The project would feature 3,000 sq ft of ground floor commercial space.

The latest plans, which go before Blackpool Council’s planning committee tomorrow, have been scaled back since the project was first mooted a year ago.

The original scheme proposed 29 apartments within a nine-storey building, but the scheme was tweaked after planning officers raised concerns about its scale.

Newsteer is the planning consultant for the project and Nissen Richards is the architect.

I hope it goes ahead as it would be a lovely area to live in Blackpool .

I think the old PO on Abingdon street would make a better block of flats, first its already there and ready for redeveloping, second its not overbearing in size, plus its got its own parking area round the back

Horrible idea. This is a retail area not residential. Where are all the residents’ cars going to park?

Last place I would want to live is blackpool town centre plus vintro lounge has just opened and looks great

Absolutely stupid. The newly opened Vintro Lounge has to be one of the best looking venues in the town and yet it seems the planners are set to allow this great asset to be demolished to make way for flats? There must be a lot of money going into someone’s pockets if this is passed. Frankly I would lose all faith and respect in them in the positions that make the decisions if this gets the go ahead.

Absolutely disgusting if this goes ahead.. Ridiculous idea, also one of the greatest restaurants this town has ever had The Vintro lounge has just opend.. Blackpool Council don’t be so…. STUPID!!!!

While any new developments in Blackpool town centre are always welcome, I think this is entirely the wrong location. To create town centre living, I think a far better location would be further down Abingdon street, at the junction of Talbot Road. Maybe the steals building or across the road where the former Santander and Brighthouse buildings are.
